Research funding opportunity provided by National Geographic Society

The National Geographic Society (NGS or NatGeo) is a global non-profit with more than 130 years of experience in sharing stories and raising awareness of Earth’s valuable resources through film and photography. This organization seeks to enlighten and empower those who share this vision by supporting students, experts, and researchers in their given fields by supplying grants and resources to hundreds of organizations World-wide.

NGS focuses its resources toward 3 primary focus areas: species conservation, ecosystem conservation, and human history/diversity. If an individual, student, or researcher’s projectaligns with these focus areas, they can apply for grants starting from $5,000-$10,000 even for those with little to no experience. However, with proven experience in project execution, individuals may earn up to $150,000, which makes this a perfect opportunity for those aiming for a Master’s or Doctorate degree.

The requirements for this organization’s proposals are truly unique. Because NGS’s desire is to inspire passionate individuals to take action, each proposal will be carefully considered and given individualized feedback and encouragement, even if not funded. NGS will accept applications 4 times per year, usually during January, April, July and November. Most of the time, successful projects are only 1-1.5 years in length, but applicants may reapply with a new project ad libitum.

Applications should be submitted in less than 10 pages, and in English. However, because Nat Geo is passionate about empowering global cooperation, English is not the primary criteria for selection. International and ESL students are encouraged to apply if they have a new and meaningful idea. If you have a passion, and atransformative idea, you might just be exactly the kind of person Nat Geo is looking for!
