The nature field trip to Cat Ba was organized for scientific purposes to study biodiversity, including animals and plant species as well as ecology. This is an opportunity for students majoring in Biology to experience and learn practically about organisms and their habitats. With the spirit of discovery and research, students of the 72nd batch spent days surveying, collecting data and observing diverse ecosystems in Cat Ba island.
Leading the research field trip team to Cat Ba National Park was Assoc. Prof., Dr. Bui Minh Hong (team leader) along with other lecturers and researchers from departments of Botany, Zoology and all students from the 72nd batch of the Faculty of Biology. From the Cat Ba National Park, there were leaders, managers, and staff who enthusiastically supported the group members to study and explore Cat Ba National Park.
In the primeval forests, the richness of vegetation from immeasurably high ancient trees to shrubs and herbs has been discovered, each plant species containing its own story of adaptation and survival in harsh environments. The knowledge about their classification and biological characteristics is meticulously recorded by students in their field notes. Not only about plants, the students also had the opportunity to research rare animals, such as the Cat Ba Langur - an endemic primate threatened by extinction, thereby understanding more about the complexity and the wonderful balance that nature maintains.
In the first research session, students experienced the route to Eel Pond with a distance of about 3 - 4 km. Along both sides of the road, creatures of many different species, families, and orders were present. The vegetation layers characterize the rocky terrain, which is the home of numerous animals, such as insects, snails, frogs, lizards. At the end of this route, students could see that their treasure of knowledge has opened a new page about animals, plants, and ecology, valuable knowledge that just only their students have the opportunity to accumulate.
Next, the whole group immersed themselves in the wonderful natural scenery of the Kim Giao - Ngu Lam forest route. This place carries the breath of nature, embracing each footfall with the invigorating atmosphere of the verdant forest, the shade of high Nageia fleuryi trees, and the murmuring sounds of birds singing like nature love songs. Blended into that was the image of a group of students with youthful enthusiasm trying to overcome their own limits to conquer the 225 m high Ngu Lam peak to enjoy the entire scenery of the majestic Cat Ba National Park.
A trip to Cat Ba National Park is about discovering natural beauty and a journey to discover previously unknown biological knowledge. Setting foot in Trung Trang cave, we felt lost in a mysterious and metaphorical world. Along the way, sturdy rocks stretch creating a majestic path deep inside the mountain. Exploring Trung Trang Cave is the moment when students realize the beauty of nature creation through the sediments and stalactites in the cave, and especially when going deep into the cave, we could witness with our own eyes the living habitats of bats.
The mangrove forest in Cat Ba is a symbol of the harmony between water and land, where life flourishes and develops in a unique and magical way. Entering the mangrove forest, we were immediately attracted to its wild and mysterious beauty. The roots of the Avicennia tree shoot out of the water like fingers reaching up to the sky, creating a wonderful natural picture, and on top of the dark brown mud, countless brackish water creatures, such as mudskippers, and shrimps, crabs, ... were swimming and welcoming students to observe and study.
The final research destination is the bustling Cat Ba market. In here, the students had the opportunity to witness firsthand the remarkable diversity and abundance of marine species that inhabit the waters around Cat Ba. They are able to apply their theoretical knowledge from Zoology to practical situations, classifying the various marine species they encounter. The market serves as a testament to the rich and varied seafood resources that Cat Ba Island has to offer. From familiar seafood like shrimp, crabs, and fish to more exotic marine species namely green mussels, two-spout clams, purple clams, and oysters, the market showcases the rare and precious gifts that the azure sea bestows upon Cat Ba.
The nature research field trip course at Cat Ba was a memorable and emotional experience. During our days in Cat Ba, we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of nature, listening to the gentle waves, breathing in the fresh air, and admiring the pristine beauty bestowed by nature. One of the most unforgettable moments was when we climbed up the mountain peak early in the morning. Successfully navigating the 16 km journey, despite being exhausted, the feeling of achievement made each student proud.
Not only nature, but the people of Cat Ba also left a deep impression. Their hospitality and sincerity made us feel like we had returned home, being among loved ones. The stories about their lives intertwined with the sea helped us understand more about the local culture and human connections here.
The trip to Cat Ba was not just a field trip course but also a journey to explore and develop a deeper love for our homeland. The beautiful memories, valuable lessons, and warm affection of the locals will forever be seared in my heart. Cat Ba, with its wild and simple beauty, taught us to appreciate and preserve the natural values that life offers.
